Entrevista a Evie Richards

Muchas gracias

English

Have you already assimilated your fantastic gold medal in the Cyclocross World Championship in Valkenburg? How was the race? previous moments, during and post...
It was physically the hardest race i have ever done. The night before the race I had been up all night and managed to fall asleep around 4:30-5 the morning of the race. I was so nervous, I felt like the eyes were on me after the result from Namur and this just left me too nervous to sleep. At the start of the race I had a bit of a slow start and had a small crash on one of the first corners, but i needed this to snap myself into the race! Coming into the 3rd laps my gears went and I just had to keep my legs spinning so fast, I tried to keep calm as I new my amazing pit crew would be ready with a fresh bike. Coming up the final set of stairs felt amazing and seeing all the GB flags as I crossed the finish line made me so proud to be British, representing my country always feels so special!

Many have said that it was the hardest race of the year ... was it so hard?
I think the video of me collapsing over the line, just about sums up how hard it was!

Was there special celebration with friends and family?
Normally my mum loves throwing a big party, any excuse for a dance! But there hasn’t been any big celebrations, due to how fast the MTB season has come round! However when I arrived home my older sister had made some amazing food and my auntie made me an World Champs cake, as long as I get a brownie after World Champs thats a big enough celebration for me!

And now that? Do you have to rest and prepare for the MTB season?
No rest unfortunately, I’m jumping straight back to it, for the first World Cup in South Africa. However I have a list of things I want to do before I dash off but, i’ll just have to squeeze these round training!

Now that nobody hears us ... after the cyclocross season have you allowed any excess with the food that was prohibited during the season? ;)
A brownie and a piece of cheese cake! We drove 9 hours home on the Sunday after the race, the first thing I did when I got in  at 9 pm was bake a salted caramel cheese cake for the family!

Both disciplines (MTB and cyclocross) are fully compatible in terms of calendar or preparation, but the road is more complicated, do you have in mind to do something from other disciplines such as road or track? Or will you focus exclusively on MTB and cyclocross?
I love both MTB and Cyclocross as I love being outside. Road has never appealed to me greatly, however my dad took me on the track once and I loved it, the adrenaline was amazing ! So maybe one day I might get a chance to have a go. But I love the mud too much to change over, I’m an outdoors girl at heart.

In your social networks we can see a lot of photos where practically all of you are smiling. Always happy. How is Evie in privacy? at home, with friends and family. what do you like to do?
I love my family more than anything, so being based at home is something very special to me.They are very understanding of the random life I live. My younger sister loves her PJ and so she is a great influence to get me to rest and watch films by the fire and understands that if I don’t speak its not me being rude I am just too tired to open my mouth! My mum is my best friend and although she doesn’t understand the competivtieness of the sport, she is amazing at putting normal life in perspective and always keeps me smiling. My dad has more jobs than it is possible, he takes me to all my races, washes my bikes, leads some of the cross sessions and i even comes to the gym ( i’m teaching him to squat at the moment !) My elder sister is my number 1 supporter and comes to all my races, and there is no better cheerer than her ! At home she’s is the best for taking me out for coffee and being the caring mum figure who’s always looking out for me. So with all these things combine there is no reason I shouldn’t be smiling, I am a very lucky girl. I have had some really tough times over the winter when I wasn’t smiling last year, but I turn my phone off when this happens and just try an focus on getting back to being happy.

Do you have any hobbies that are not related to cycling?
I have always been very sporty so all of my hobbies have always been around physical activity, however on rest days i have had to find new things to do! Being a girl I love shopping however this isn’t always very restful, my mums heart rate goes up higher when we shop together than it does in her spin class! So coffee shops sometimes have to take over from hours of shopping. I love my journal, there is nothing I love more than writing in my diary and making a good playlist to listen too. I have hundreds and my sister and I create playlists for each other when I’m away to keep in touch. But I love any thing from pottery painting one rest day to a big day of baking. Normally you with find me in the kitchen either dancing around sing my younger sister into brooms trying to distract daddy from his work or cooking as I love for everyone and creating new healthy recipes. Going out for coffee is my favourite but this is even better when its in the company of my grandparents or my cousins.

The cycling world has indicated you as one of the great stars of the future of cycling, does this generate you more pressure and stress? O However it gives you wings and strength to keep going.
I try not to think about things like this too much, I just stick to trying to enjoy riding, If I am happy the results come better!

You were in a Training Camp in Mallorca days before the Valkenburg World Cup. Did you like the island? What did you think of our country (Spain)?
I do the same trip to Spain every year and I always feel so lucky to go on it! We stay in an amazing hotel, ride the most beautiful roads and I get a massage every evening, what could be better, I’m living the dream!

Do you know how to speak or say something in Spanish? ;)
I did spanish for GCSE so i can still say ‘My name is Evie, I am 12 years old’ thats not much help now that I am 20!

Some of your characteristics are your beautiful smile and your long hair. In the form of a braid when you compete and in the form of a ponytail/bun in the podiums. So much hair will not be good for the aerodynamics nor for the weight but it is your hallmark. Have you thought or cut it?
I get it cut twice a year a week before both World Champs, but not for weight just to make me feel nice. When Im riding I have such a strong concentration face I need all the hair and make up on the try and make me look a little less scary! As for the smile my mum loves quotes, and the one she says is ‘a smile is the prettiest thing you can wear’

Thank you very much for everything and never stop smiling or enjoying with the bicycle
Thank you!!
